"MEET MY EX-BOSS, JOE" --Left to right, Joe Cronin, Dave (Boo) Ferriss, Lt James Flack, who was Dave Ferriss' high school baseball coach. Yesterday was the first time Flack had seen Dave pitch in the big leagues.

MEETING TED WILLIAMS - remembrance by James M. Flack II

In 1950 my father and I (age 6) went from our home in Westford MA to Fenway Park to see my godfather Boo Ferris pitch. Boo was the ace for the Boston Red Sox having won 21 games in his rookie year. My father was Boo’s high coach baseball coach in Shaw Mississippi and Boo was best man at my parents’ wedding a decade later. As coach my father had moved Boo from center field to pitcher, which led to a Red Sox Hall of Fame career.
In 1950 Ted Williams was the embattled star of the Red Sox who had a running feud with the local press over many issues including taking time off by not playing late innings of some games.
When Boo was taken out in the 7th inning, my father and I left to get a jump on traffic. As we passed the players’ entrance at Fenway, my dad (who knew Boo’s friend Ted) saw Ted exiting and called him over to the passenger side of the car to introduce 6-year-old me.
Knowing we were leaving early, I asked Ted “why aren’t you still playing?”. The next thing I saw was not Ted Williams but the headliner of the car as my embarrassed father pulling me by the back of the collar.
