'Herodot in Olympia', study for a Austrian Parliament Building frieze by August Eisenmenger
"Herodot in Olympia", study for a Austrian Parliament Building frieze by August Eisenmenger
In 1883, the architect Theophil Hansen solicited proposals for a program of decorative friezes to adorn the chamber of the former House of Representatives (Abgeordnetenhaus) in the newly constructed Austrian Parliament Building in Vienna. Conceived within a framework of classical and civic-humanist ideals, the project sought to visually articulate the philosophical and political foundations of modern parliamentary governance. Among the artists invited to contribute was August Eisenmenger, who submitted several preparatory studies, including a composition titled Herodot in Olympia (Herodotus at Olympia) and was awarded the commission for the frieze program.

This work portrays the ancient Greek historian Herodotus reciting his Histories at the Olympic Games—an allegorical meditation on democratic discourse, public oratory, and the civic function of historiography. The subject matter resonated strongly with Hansen’s broader iconographic program for the friezes, which aimed to represent paradigmatic scenes of public deliberation, legislative assembly, and the pursuit of justice—concepts central to the identity of a constitutional state.

According to the Dorotheum Auction House (https://www.dorotheum.com/en/l/9320641/), Eisenmenger’s study formed the basis for the ninth panel in a fifteen-part frieze ultimately realized in 1886 for the Imperial Council Chamber. The reverse of the sketch bears an inscription identifying its intended placement: "in the former House of Representatives, center, 1st picture right." Executed in oil on canvas mounted on cardboard, the work measures 32 x 29 cm and remains preserved in its original frame.

MEETING TED WILLIAMS - remembrance by James M. Flack II

In 1950 my father and I (age 6) went from our home in Westford MA to Fenway Park to see my godfather Boo Ferris pitch. Boo was the ace for the Boston Red Sox having won 21 games in his rookie year. My father was Boo’s high coach baseball coach in Shaw Mississippi and Boo was best man at my parents’ wedding a decade later. As coach my father had moved Boo from center field to pitcher, which led to a Red Sox Hall of Fame career.
In 1950 Ted Williams was the embattled star of the Red Sox who had a running feud with the local press over many issues including taking time off by not playing late innings of some games.
When Boo was taken out in the 7th inning, my father and I left to get a jump on traffic. As we passed the players’ entrance at Fenway, my dad (who knew Boo’s friend Ted) saw Ted exiting and called him over to the passenger side of the car to introduce 6-year-old me.
Knowing we were leaving early, I asked Ted “why aren’t you still playing?”. The next thing I saw was not Ted Williams but the headliner of the car as my embarrassed father pulling me by the back of the collar.

All in a Days Living vol-1 (of 3) Hertha and Jim Flack Recollections
INTRODUCTION
Dear Kids:
This manuscript is made up of recollections of the past. Most of these memories were preserved in my Mare's Nest and in Tah's file of letters. Fortunately, Tah had requested her mother, Sonya, to save her letters home which she wrote regularly from Puerto Rico. My mare's nest, as most of you know, has been the storage drawer for my notes and miscellany for a long, long time ...
