Joseph Gerber Obituary

Joseph Sidney Gerber, 81, of Charlottesville, passed away on Thursday, July 14, 2022. Joe was the son of the late Milton and Zelda Gerber. He is survived by his brother, Edward Gerber, sister-in-law, Candace Smith, and two nieces, Leah Gerber and Krista Gerber.

Joe was born in Baltimore, Maryland, where he attended both public schools and Hebrew School and was bar mitzvahed in 1954. He moved to Charlottesville with his family in 1959. Joe attended the University of Virginia and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1963. He attained academic honors and lettered in both track and cross country. As a member of the Virginia Players, he performed in numerous plays produced by the University's drama department. It was during this time at U.Va. that Joe developed his lifelong love of poetry.

Joe's adult life was burdened by mental illness. Although this condition precluded him from pursuing a normal life, it never diminished his kind and gentle soul. He was unfailingly kind, courteous and respectful to everyone he met. And the love he bestowed upon his nieces, Leah and Krista, will forever be cherished by them. His extra long hugs, his innovative versions of grace at meals, and his annual reading of The Night Before Christmas are permanently etched in our family history. If there is a place for virtuous souls after life on this earth, Joe is there.

For the care they gave Joe over the years, we extend thanks and appreciation to Region Ten, Mountainside Senior Living, and Cedars Healthcare Center. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Region Ten Community Services, 800 Preston Avenue, Charlottesville, VA 22903.

A private graveside service honoring Joe's life will be held on Sunday, July 24, 2022.
