Promised a horse and saddle at 16, JJ headed west to Oklahoma Territory, then to southern Mississippi, Stephenson (later re-named Crosby). Worked at Foster Creek Lumber Co, which folded because of the Depression. In 1931 Crosby Lumber Co. opened for 2 years before also closing in the Depression.

JJ started a 1-acre garden and helped feed the community. His wife, Lenora, became the Crosby Postmistress. They moved to Pascagoula in 1940 in a house with a grocery store. He also worked in the shipyards.
