Thomas Flack of Guilford obtained a grant from Lord Granville for 181 acres along the Walnut Branch in Rowan County (now Guilford) in 1761 and operated a grist and saw mill on or near these Lands.

He was an early member of Buffalo Presbyterian Church, and 'Rankin's History' refers to him as "a young man" at the time of his arrival. Buffalo Prebyterian was established by Scots-Irish who were part of the Nottingham Coloney that purchased a large tract of land (over 20,000 acres) on Buffalo and Reedy Fork Creeks and were among the first settlers of present day Guilford in the early 1750's.

Probably soon after his arrival in Rowan/Guilford Thomas Flack married Jane (or Jean) McQuistion/McQuiston (1735-1802), the daughter of one of the original Nottingham colonists, James McQuiston (1700-1766) who was born in County Derry, Ireland, and received a Granville land grant along the Reedy Fork in 1753. Thomas Flack witnessed James McQuistons will which was proven in Rowan court in 1766.

James McQuiston also had (possibly) a brother Robert, and Thomas Flack also witnessed Robert McQuistons will, proven in Rowan Court in 1766.

Thomas Flack was a Patriot of some note and was active as a leader in the Regulation Movement or 1770-71, he was apparently implicated with the Hillsborough mob that attacked the infamous Tory Edmund Fanning, demolishing his house and brutally whipping him. Evidence also shows it's quite possible he was present at the battle of Alamance.

Later during the revolution, Thomas Flack served as Captain and commanded a company in a Guilford Militia regiment led by Col. James Martin. Surviving Revolutionary War account books indicate that he participated in expeditions to Cross Creek (now Fayetteville) and Wilmington in early 1776 and he was possibly at the Battle of Moore's Creek.

Thomas Flack and wife Jane sold their Walnut Branch tract of land in 1773 to a John Chambers.

In August 1778, a 300 acre Guilford land warrant was applied for by "Jane Flack, WIDOW", for the lands upon which Thomas Flack had "formerly lived ... including an improvement whereon the said Thomas Flack had a grist and saw mill". This grant was issued to Jane Flack in 1783.

From the History of the Flack Family by Horace E. Flack, 1948, published
in 1972 by Helen Flack Cole:

"The head of one of the Flack families [James] was born in Northern
Ireland in 1708 and came to Pennsylvania about 1733 and married Ann
Baxter soon after landing. To this couple were born 10 children - 9 sons
and 1 daughter. Two of the children named John and William died in
infancy, but two other sons were given these same names. The names of the
sons were John, James, Joseph, Robert, William, Samuel and Benjamin and
the daughter was named Sarah."

"A Family tree has been prepared for some of the members of this
James Flack and shows the following names of sons recurring time and time
again in every generation - James, Joseph, William, John, George, Thomas
- and many of these names occurred even in cases of the children on the
distaff side of the family. One of the direct descendants of this James
Flack, also named James, made a statement at the reunions of 1908 and
1909 to the effect that their ancestors who had emigrated to this country
from Northern Ireland, were Presbyterians and had most likely been driven
out of Scotland at the time of the persecution of the Christians
(Protestants) in that country. The first James Flack lived to be 94 years
of age and the James Flack who prepared the above statement for the
reunion for the Flacks in Pennsylvania said in 1910 (when he was 76 years
of age) that he was one of the fourth generation of the first Flack who
emigrated to America and that there were then about three generations
younger than his and that as the Flacks were generally blessed with large
families, it was almost impossible to get a full genealogy of the
descendant of their ancestor, James Flack, as the number would probably
run into the thousands and would be found residing in many States. . . .
"In this connection, it is interesting to note, that one of the
descendants of James Flack is a career man in the State Department at
Washington and is now American Ambassador to Bolivia."

James married Ann McDowell Baxter on 12 Sept 1734. Ann (daughter of David Baxter and Esther McDowell) was born in 1714 in Somerset PA (possibly IRL); died on 2 Mar 1801 in Doylestown, Bucks Co, PA; was buried in Mar 1801 in Neshaminy Cemetery, Hartsville, Bucks PA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Notes:

Ann Baxter was born in 1714 in Somerset, Pennsylvania. She married James Flack on September 12, 1734, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. They had 11 children in 21 years. She died on March 2, 1801, in Doylestown, Pennsylvania, having lived a long life of 87 years, and was buried in Bucks, Pennsylvania.
